Without further ado, let’s dive into Taniesha’s story:

Please tell us your story:

I first heard about the keto diet from a guy at work. He told me that his friend is doing the diet and lost 80 pounds and eats bacon! I was doing other short diets trying to lose. I went from 246 to 216. Then I got married and got comfortable and sure enough, I gained almost all of my weight back. Of course, I called him crazy, how can you eat bacon and lose weight? I had always heard that eating fat is bad for you. I came home from work that night and the Googling began. I read so much on the diet that I decided to start that following Monday on February 20th of 2017 at around 246 lbs. I never really got the keto flu but the cravings at first were ungodly. I knew if I didn’t see results within the first month that I would stop. The first month goes by and I’m already 20 pounds down. At that point, I became obsessed with succeeding. I joined Facebook keto groups, I joined Reddit, I made an Instagram fitness page (fiercely_fitness) and I started following people on the same diet. I couldn’t believe how popular the diet is. Posting my foods and weight loss photos held me accountable to keep pushing. It is now October and I’m weighing 168lbs. I’ve lost 78lbs. My goal is to be at 150lbs for now.

How has your life changed since going keto?

My life has changed tremendously from being more active at work to actually look in the mirror and love myself! I’ve stalled, I’ve had cheat days, I’m not perfect but I never gave up.

Do you count and track macros strictly?

I’ve recently become even more strict with my diet, instead of just staying under 20 carbs, I’ve also lowered and started tracking my calories using myfitnesspal. I track everything that I eat whether it’s a spoon full of mayo to a handful of walnuts. I usually stick to a basic meal plan of meat and vegetables, quest bars, and water.

Do you exercise? If yes, what’s your workout routine like?

Yes, I actually want to work out more now, I look forward to going to the gym. I lift weights, trying to lift heavy now to build muscle, trying to tone my body.

How do you prepare your keto meals?

I check out Pinterest for keto recipes all the time though. When I’m in a cooking mood, I might make a fathead pizza (my favorite), zoodles, with Rao’s sauce or some sort of casserole.

Have you ever encountered a plateau? If so, how did you get over it?

I’ve hit plateaus and it’s stressful, sometimes for a month or longer but I just keep pushing. If I plateau for too long, I cut out dairy or drink only water, I even cut out nuts just to break a stall.

What is your WHY (your drive/motivation) to keep on track and stay focused?

At first, I just wanted to look better but now it’s so much more than that. I want to feel better. I want to be stronger. I want to feel confident with myself. Once you see results the addiction begins. You slowly begin to love yourself as you see the changes your body is making.

Finally, what advice would you give someone who is just starting out on keto?

My advice would be to start out by educating yourself with keto and then start checking out some recipes. Set up a basic meal plan for starters and track everything! Once you get the hang of things then you can incorporate different recipes and become more/less strict with what you’re eating. And finally, do NOT give up on yourself!
