Five Guys is a fast food restaurant that specializes in selling burgers, French fries, and hot dogs. They’ve been in business since 1986 and have expanded their locations all over the world since then.
According to their website, the original restaurant was opened in Arlington, Virginia by the Murrell family and focused on serving hand-crafted burgers and fresh fries cooked in peanut oil only. In 2003, the restaurant became a franchise and the rest is history.
Today, Five Guys operates as your typical fast food restaurant. The menu is pretty basic and there aren’t a ton of options, but it’s a good place to go if you want a bunless burger or hot dog.
Please keep in mind that just because something is low in carbohydrate content per serving doesn’t always mean it’s strictly friendly on the keto diet.
On keto, it’s always best to prepare your meals at home if you’re serious about your diet. Eating out limits your intake of high-quality meats and vegetables. Sticking to your keto plan and eating only keto-approved foods will increase your chance of success.

Tips For Ordering at Five Guys
Although it seems like Five Guys pays more attention to ingredients and the overall quality of their food more than most casual and fast food restaurants, always remember that you’ll get a much better meal at home using freshly prepared ingredients.
Five Guys mentions on their website that they only use fresh ground beef for their burgers. They also don’t put freezers in their restaurants, only coolers. This indicates that you’ll never get frozen beef, which is a good start.
Additionally, we noticed that there aren’t any side salads or much opportunity for fresh vegetables at Five Guys. French fries are a definite no-no on the low-carb diet. So you won’t be left with much other than meat when you order at Five Guys.
Pairing your meat with a low-carb vegetable is important on the ketogenic diet as it increases your vitamin, antioxidant, and fiber intake.
If you’re in a pinch and Five Guys is your only way to get something in your belly, then use these tips to help keep it low-carb.
#1. Use the nutritional information as a guide
One thing that’s nice about the Five Guys nutritional guide is that they list ingredients and the nutritional breakdown of their food. Most places won’t tell you what’s in their food, so an ingredient list is a nice feature.
You can take a look at the ingredient list of their foods for yourself on their website. As you can see, all of the sauces at Five Guys are full of sugar and empty calories. Even the mayonnaise contains high fructose corn syrup and soybean oil. These are two highly inflammatory ingredients that you’ll want to avoid even if you aren’t following a low-carb diet.
Mustard is your safest condiment because it uses vinegar instead of sugar as a flavor enhancer. Fresh onions are a great topper for your burger as they contain natural prebiotics to help enhance gut health.
Beware that the grilled onions and mushrooms at Five Guys contain high fructose corn syrup in them. Stay away from the relish and ketchup as these also contain high fructose corn syrup.
#2. Know your toppings
Whether you go with a burger or a hot dog, you’ll want to get these bunless and pay attention to what comes on them. Always hold the sugary sauces, such as the A1 steak sauce, relish, ketchup, BBQ sauce, fry sauce, and mayonnaise.
Safe toppings include bacon, cheese, fresh green peppers, fresh onions, fresh tomatoes, fresh lettuce, hot sauce, and mustard. Pickles are usually OK to eat in moderation if you’re doing low-carb and keto diets. However, some brands might contain a lot of preservatives and food colorings, so it might be best to avoid these altogether.
If you’re looking to enhance the flavor of your meat without adding to the carb count, then we recommend getting an extra slice of cheese or bacon. You can’t go wrong with this combination!
#3. Go with a burger and hold the bun
Hot dogs aren’t something we recommend on the ketogenic diet because they are highly processed. Although they can be low-carb, they contribute to chronic inflammation in the body.
For example, the ingredients in a hot dog at Five Guys includes soy, hydrolyzed soy protein, flavorings, nitrates, and a ton of preservatives and salt. The bacon isn’t much better as it contains sugar, nitrates, and a whole bunch of preservatives. This is a good reminder to only eat fast food once in a blue moon and don’t make it a habit.
We recommend sticking with fresh meat instead, such as a hamburger patty, and always ask to hold the bun and sauce. If you’re extra hungry, get two hamburger patties and an extra slice of cheese to avoid the added sugars and preservatives for a truly low-carb meal.
What To Order at Five Guys
Five Guys is a burger and hot dog joint, so you won’t be going here for breakfast. They’re usually open from about 11 AM until 10 PM.
Their menu is very limited. Your only options are a hamburger, a hot dog, French fries, or a milkshake.
As we mentioned above, it’s best to go with a burger as the hot dogs are highly processed. Make sure you customize your burger so that you cut out all of the unnecessary carbs. Always order your burger without a bun or sauce and hold the fries.
We noticed that most burger options come with two hamburger patties and several slices of cheese, which is great if you’re really hungry. If you only want one patty, then go with a “little hamburger.” You can also add as many toppings to your burger or hot dog as you want.
Here are the top three dishes we recommend that you order at Five Guys based on the nutrition information:
- Hamburger patty with two pieces of bacon and one slice of cheese (1 gram carbs)
- Hot dog with one slice of cheese (<2 gram carbs)
- Hamburger patty with one slice of cheese, green peppers, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, lettuce, and two slices of bacon (3-4 grams net carbs)

For all burgers, hold the bun and ask for no sauce; choose your toppings from off the safe toppings list:
- Hamburger (two patties)
- Cheeseburger (two patties and two slices of cheese)
- Bacon burger (two patties and four slices of bacon)
- Bacon cheeseburger (two patties, two slices of bacon and two slices of cheese)
- Little hamburger (one patty)
- Little cheeseburger (one patty)
- Little bacon burger (one patty and two slices of bacon)
- Little bacon cheeseburger (one patty)
For all hot dogs, ask for no bun or sauce and choose from the safe toppings list:
- Kosher style hot dog
- Cheese dog (comes with a layer of American cheese)
- Bacon dog (comes with a layer of bacon)
- Bacon cheese dog (topped with melted American cheese and bacon)
- Pickles (in moderation)
- Fresh onions
- Hot sauce
- Jalapeno peppers
- Fresh green peppers
- Bacon (this contains sugar so eat sparingly)
Five Guys also has a few sandwich options on its menu, but they are mostly veggie based and don’t offer much meat. You can get a BLT sandwich minus the bread and mayonnaise, but we think you’d be better off ordering a burger because it’s more filling. Plus, you can always get bacon on top of your burger!
As we mentioned above, the grilled mushrooms and onions contain high fructose corn syrup. For this reason, we recommend that you stay away from the sandwiches and stick with a bunless burger instead.
Foods To Avoid at Five Guys
As you can see, there isn’t much to choose from at Five Guys. Your only two options are a burger or a hot dog. We recommend the burger with your choice of safe toppings. Here are some unsafe toppings that you’ll want to avoid because they contain sugar or other harmful ingredients.
- Mayonnaise (contains high fructose corn syrup and vegetable oil)
- Grilled onions and mushrooms (contains high fructose corn syrup per the nutritional information)
- A1 sauce
- BBQ sauce
In addition to unsafe toppings, also avoid all milkshakes, sweetened beverages, and French fries. You can ask for a lettuce wrap instead of a bun to add in some more low-carb veggies to your diet, but we aren’t sure if Five Guys offers this.
Five Guys doesn’t have much on their menu, but it’s a good place to go to get a bunless burger if you need something low-carb. We never recommend that you eat fast food as you can buy better ingredients at the store and cook them yourself at home using high-quality oils and spices. But if you’re in a hurry or if you forgot your food at home for the day, then running through the fast food line at Five Guys won’t kill you. Just don’t make a habit out of it.
Most of the burgers at Five Guys come with two patties and two slices of cheese. This is great because it fills you up. They don’t have much in the way of side dishes. You’ll want to stay away from the French fries and milkshakes.
Even the grilled vegetables contain high fructose corn syrup, which is baffling to us. Because hot dogs are highly processed and contain sugar and nitrates, we recommend staying away from them. The bacon at Five Guys also contains sugar and nitrates. So if you want a truly low-carb meal, stick with a double meat patty, two slices of cheese, fresh lettuce and onions, and no bun or sauce.
